• What is commonly called “raw” steel is in fact steel that retains its mill scale (a thin layer of stable iron oxides that remain on the surface of the steel as a byproduct of the forging process). This mill scale is responsible for the deep black/blue coloration that is desired with a raw finish.

This mill scale provides a moderate amount of protection against rust, but is very thin and prone to cracking and other damage. In order to further protect the underlying steel, we use an oil-based finish to prevent further corrosion.

Some amount of surface rust is still expected, but can be mitigated with the occasional application of detailing wax or finisher’s wax as necessary.

  • Our rusted steel products are fabricated with A606 Weathering steel, which is formulated to create a superficial coating of rust that further protects the steel from oxidization.

This steel should not be finished with any other coating, as the rust itself provides the protection. In areas that are rusting unevenly as the steel weathers, judicious application of saltwater can encourage this rust formation process.

  • We recommend the use of mild soap and water in conjunction with a soft-bristled brush for cleaning painted and powder coated finishes. The use of solvents or commercial cleaners can damage the finish. Small chips and other superficial damage can be concealed with the application of enamel paint matching the color and gloss level of the original finish.
